GMHC Stories

Terms of use · Draft for review

Use the collection with care.

These terms are intended to preserve research access while respecting narrators, archival donors, rights holders, and the institutions that preserve the underlying collections.

Research access

GMHC Stories provides registered users with free access for personal study, teaching, scholarship, and other lawful research. An account belongs to one person and may not be shared.

Copyright and other rights

Materials on this site may be protected by copyright, privacy, publicity, contractual, or other rights. Access does not transfer ownership or grant permission to publish, distribute, exhibit, broadcast, or commercially reuse an item. Users are responsible for identifying rights holders and obtaining any permission required for their intended use.

Archival collections and citation

The website is guided primarily by the GMHC Stories Collection and also draws on the Gay Men’s Health Crisis Records. Both collections are preserved in perpetuity by The New York Public Library. Individual timeline records identify their supporting sources when known. Users should cite the specific item, collection, GMHC Stories, and The New York Public Library as appropriate.

Copies and downloads

Any copy made available through the site is for personal research unless the item’s rights statement says otherwise. Do not remove credits or source information, redistribute collections of files, or use downloaded material to create a substitute archive.

Automated collection

Scraping, harvesting, bulk downloading, automated transcription, systematic extraction, and attempts to bypass access or download controls are prohibited without prior written permission from GMHC Stories.

Respectful use

The collection documents HIV/AIDS, sexuality, health, loss, activism, and the lives of identifiable people. Users agree not to use the material to harass, exploit, misrepresent, or expose people to foreseeable harm.

Account enforcement

GMHC Stories may limit, suspend, or close accounts used in violation of these terms or in ways that threaten the security, availability, or integrity of the archive. Relevant access activity may be logged for security and abuse prevention.

Corrections and questions

Descriptions and rights information may be corrected as research continues. Contact the project if you believe a record is inaccurate, improperly attributed, or available in error.
